Official Canadian NHL team apps, eh!
Hockey is back and whether your favorite Canadian team or home team is the Calgary Flames, Edmonton Oilers, Montréal Canadiens, Ottawa Senators, Toronto Maple Leafs, Vancouver Canucks or the Winnipeg Jets, you’ll want to know that amongst the sea of apps, each has their own official selection. They're all free and each one is universal so they will run on most iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch devices.
Most of the apps cover the common elements, like stats, standings, photos, videos and schedules. You might even notice perhaps some similarity in look and feel. However, not all seven apps are produced by the same developer, so features and options will vary. While we won’t cover every feature, here are a few items of note for each app, in alphabetical order, so it doesn’t look like we're picking favourites.
The Calgary Flames app offers behind-the-scenes video, including news conferences as well as full access to the message boards on Calgary Flames.com. You'll even get video from the Flames dressing room produced by calgaryflames.com.
The Edmonton Oilers Mobile app offers audio podcasts, social media integration including aggregated tweets from all your favorite Oil tweeps and one-click Facebook posting of all media items. It also offers a digital keepsake - your game time moment can be superimposed right on the Rexall Place video board.
The Canadiens de Montréal app is available in both of Canada's official languages English and French. It includes full access to message boards on canadiens.com. You get social media feeds, interactive player cards and locker room updates on the players directly from the players themselves.
The Ottawa Senators Hockey Club app offers the Sens’ interactive schedule as well as an interactive map of Scotia Place to help you find your seat and nearest concessions. The app also offers exclusive content as well as Facebook and Twitter updates, behind the scene photos and SENS TV video. If you need tickets, you can buy those too.
Toronto's entry, Leafs Mobile, includes a news ticker, a breakdown of key head-to-head player match ups as well as a customizable player tracker. Its social view allows you to read all Maple Leaf related tweets as well as see behind-the-scenes video of Leafs events, including alternate camera views, press conferences and player and coach interviews.
The Vancouver Canucks app, simply called Canucks, offers an interactive schedule and arena virtual map so you can quickly find your seat and nearby amenities. It too offers full access to the message boards on canucks.com. You can get one-tap access to photo galleries and pics from practices and happenings behind the scenes.
The Official Winnipeg Jets Mobile App certainly has the longest name. It offers the Jets' interactive schedule results, news and videos, game photos and social stream. You also get player cards, bios, stats and more.
And finally, the official Hockey Goal Horns app ($0.99), an exclusive iOS app is a must have for hockey fans who like to show their support and make a lot of noise. It features all team's goal horns and songs - organ songs too; goal light, ringtones, and twitter stream of all teams and fans.
If you prefer, you can record and create your own – horn that is, not team or make a playlist of the ones you have.
